All students wishing to take a course higher than 1011 (the first of a two-semester sequence of Beginning Japanese) are required to take a placement test if:

(1) you have not taken Japanese at the University of Minnesota.
(2) your grade for the preceding course is not a C- or better nor an S.
(3) you completed the preceding course prior to Fall 2008.

*You may not take a placement test for the same course twice within a calendar year.

Prerequisite: Your name on the Classlist or Waitlist for the course (or your instructor's consent)
In order to take a placement test, you must enroll for the course or put your name on the waitlist, or get consent from the course instructor.

2. How to Prepare for the Test

The placement test for each level consists of two parts: written and oral. Please read the texbook(s) and chapters indicated below to prepare. Textbooks are available at the University Bookstore in Coffman Memorial Union (612-625-6000).

1012 (the second semester of Beginning Japanese):
Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, Vol.1 (Japan Times), up to and including Lesson 6
3021 (the first semester of Intermediate Japanese):
Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, Vol.1 (Japan Times), up to and including Lesson 12
3022 (the second semester of Intermediate Japanese):
Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, Vol. 2 (Japan Times), up to and including Lesson 17
3031 (the first semester of Third-Year Japanese):
Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, Vol. 2 (Japan Times), up to and including Lesson 22
3032 (the second semester of Third-Year Japanese):
Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, Vol. 2 (Japan Times), up to and including Lesson 22
An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese (Japan Times), Lessons 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6
4041 (the first semester of Fourth-Year Japanese):

3. Online Registration Form

*NOTE: Please enroll for the course you wish to be placed in before the semester begins and attend that class on the first day, so that you will not miss anything if / when you are officially admitted to the course. (Please note that attendance points are given only to those who are physically in class.) We will notify you of the results of the placement test via email on the day you take the test. Please change your enrollment status upon receiving those results, if necessary. Passing the placement test does not guarantee you a seat in the class. Should you have any questions, please contact an instructor of the course you want to be placed in.
