The Richard B. and Virginia Mather Fellowship in Asian Languages and Literatures

We are pleased to announce the establishment of a new graduate student fellowship in honor of Richard B. and Virginia Mather. Richard and Ginny have been dear colleagues and good friends through the many manifestations of Asian studies at the University of Minnesota over the last 60 years.

In his research and teaching Richard ranged broadly through the literatures of Asia, primarily those in Chinese, but also Japanese and Sanskrit. It is particularly appropriate that this new fellowship will be available to graduate students in our new Ph.D. program in Asian literature, cultures and media.

Your generosity will help ensure our ability to attract the best and brightest Mather Fellows, who like Richard, will advance the knowledge of Asian languages and literatures. Make a gift to the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures online through the University of Minnesota Foundation.

You Make Us Great

In this first decade of the 21st century, Asian nations are poised to exert enormous influence on the world. Here at the University of Minnesota, the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures encourages critical understanding of the histories and cultures of Asia’s geographic regions and their roles in the world.

Your tax-deductible contribution provides our students with encouragement and financial support. It gives our faculty the resources to advance our knowledge of Asian languages, literatures, and cultures. It helps to maintain the department’s distinguished reputation.

What Your Gift Can Do

Your generous support for the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures is more critical than ever in helping us attract and retain the very best scholars and students.

Your contribution allows us to ensure:

  • A distinguished faculty
Creating endowed chairs and professorships and supporting interdisciplinary research centers and programs will help us recruit and retain outstanding faculty.
  • Excellence and competitiveness of our graduate program
We need to ensure the excellence and competitiveness of our graduate programs so that we can compete for the best faculty and brightest students.
  • A diverse and engaged undergraduate student body
Although we are attracting better students than even before, too many outstanding students choose other institutions—often for financial reasons. Merit and need-based scholarships are essential for recruiting these talented students.

To remain competitive, we need your support for graduate student fellowships and faculty research funds. We have several funds that may interest you:
